Kolkata: An undertrial prisoner who was arrested in connection with an Arms Act case in 2015, escaped from the premises of Alipore Judges Court by throwing chilli powder into the eyes of a police constable.

The incident happened while the prisoner Sheikh Rajjak was being taken to the court lock-up after his production before the eighth Additional District Magistrate (ADJ) of Alipore Judges Court where his trial was going on.

According to sources, the prisoner wanted to have a glass of sugarcane juice on his way to the lock-up. Constable Dipankar Pattanayek of Tollygunge police station, who was entitled to look after his security, refused to stop in the court premises. Suddenly, he took out some chilli powder from his pocket and threw the same into the eyes of the constable. The constable gave him a chase even with terrible irritation in his eyes, but failed to catch him.

Eyewitnesses informed the police that Rajjak had fled away on a motorcycle that was stationed at the exit gate. A case has been initiated at Alipore police station on the basis of the statement of the constable.

"We have started a probe into the incident. Action will be taken against those involved in dereliction of duty," a senior police officer said.

Rajjak, a resident of Tangra, was arrested on September 18, 2015.
