Pregnant woman forced to consume acid, dies

A pregnant woman was allegedly forced to consume an acid-like liquid by her husband after she failed to bring money from her parental house.
The woman later died in the hospital and the foetus she had been carrying was also killed in the incident. The incident occurred at Chandipur in East Midnapore on Tuesday night which triggered tension in the area.The accused husband and his family members fled from the spot immediately after the incident. The local residents of the Narayandari village under Chandipur police station heard the screams of the victim. When they rushed to the house, they found the woman wreathing in tremendous pain with her face burnt. They rushed the victim to Tamluk district hospital where the doctors said that foetus the woman had been carrying was killed. Despite doctors' attempts to cure the victim, she died in the hospital as various organs, including the food pipe were completely damaged in the incident. The family members of the victim lodged a complaint in the local police station on the basis of which police have started a probe. The victim Rubina got married to Seikh Rejaul a few years ago. The victim's family members alleged that the accused started torturing his wife a few days after their marriage and used to demand money. The victim's father had failed to pay the amount the accused had demanded from them as dowry. The victim had been subjected to both mental and physical torture at her in-laws' house. The accused husband used to create pressure on the woman to bring money from her parental house. After the accused came to know that the woman became pregnant, he asked her to undergo abortion. As the woman protested against it, she had been beaten up by her husband. A quarrel broke out between the victim and her husband on Tuesday night when the latter forced the woman to consume acid.
Police are conducting raids to nab the culprits who are still at large. The body has been sent for the post-mortem examination.
