Kolkata: Results of seven civic bodies will be announced on Thursday.
The polls in five municipalities — Bunidpur, Dhupguri, Panskura, Haldia and Nalhati along with Cooper's Camp Notified Authority and Durgapur Municipal Corporation were held on August 13.
The election was by and large peaceful. Braving inclement weather, people thronged around the polling stations in Dhupguri municipality in Siliguri.
Trinamool Congress has already bagged two seats in Panskura municipality where CPI(M) and BJP candidates had withdrawn their candidature.
Trinamool Congress has left no stones unturned to win in the civic election as it will give a boost to the supporters before the Panchayat poll scheduled to be held in 2018.
The election was a test of strength for the BJP. After 2016 Assembly election, the BJP had secured second position in the Assembly by elections.
In the 2016 Assembly polls, the Congress and CPI(M) had fought together but in most of the municipalities they are fighting separately.
Political experts said that in many municipalities, the Congress, BJP and CPI(M) fought together against Trinamool Congress.
Trinamool Congress had deployed heavyweight leaders including Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, Aroop Biswas, Firhad Hakim to campaign for the party's nominees.
The main thrust behind the campaign was the development and divisive politics of the BJP. With the passage of time, people both in rural and semi-urban areas have realised that Trinamool Congress' top priority is development. Kanyashree and Sabuj Sathi have consolidated the party's support base in rural areas.
Also, construction of rural roads and supply of filtered water in villages have gone in the favour of the party.
