Kolkata: State Education minister Partha Chatterjee said on Wednesday that his department has sought a video footage of the alleged assault on Jadavpur Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das to find out who are behind the incident. The minister met Das at a private hospital in Dhakuria in the morning where he has been hospitalised since Tuesday after the alleged 'manhandling' and said that the entire matter will be probed.
"We have asked for a video footage of the incident. We want to find out who all are behind. The Vice Chancellor is still in a state of shock," he said.
Stating that Das was subjected to 'verbal abuse' he said: "I have heard about the entire incident from the Pro-V-C and registrar. I will certainly report the matter to the
Chief Minister. JU is a matter of pride for all of us."
The incident occurred when Das was came out after attending the executive council meeting of the university and was about to board his car on Tuesday afternoon.
A section of the students in the university held a rally on the university campus to Golpark in demand of student election. They had staged an indefinite sit-in demonstration before Gandhi Bhavan on Tuesday.
Members of Trinamool Chatra Parishad organised a counter rally condemning the manhandling of the V-C. A hospital spokesperson informed that Das is in stable condition and is expected to be discharged on Thursday.
"Doctors have decided to keep him under observation for one more night since he did not have sound sleep on Tuesday. He got admitted on Tuesday with some injuries to his right shoulder, chest and hip, for which he underwent X-ray and other investigations," a release from the hospital said.
It added that Das has a history of hypertension and high blood sugar levels, his BP had shot up and he was feeling unwell when he was brought to the hospital's Emergency ward on Tuesday evening.
"He was administered necessary medicines and he underwent X-ray of his right shoulder, chest and the hip on Tuesday night," the spokesperson said.
