Kolkata: Demanding respect for human rights on the International Day of Peace, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that "the right to live in peace and dignity must always be respected".

The message of the Chief Minister is quite significant as she has repeatedly raised her voice against various anti-people moves of the Centre and its indifference towards the incidents in various parts of the country which are "outcomes of intolerance".

Banerjee, who is on a tour of Germany and Italy at present, tweeted on Friday morning: "Today is the International Day of Peace. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

She further mentioned in the tweet: "Respect for human rights and consequently, the right to live in peace and dignity, must always be respected."

It may be mentioned that besides raising her voice against various anti-people moves, she has also taken various measures to ensure that the rich tradition of peace and harmony in Bengal never gets disturbed.

It was stated earlier that there were reports of attempts to create disturbance in the state by spreading rumours. People were brought in from neighbouring states and even neighbouring countries to create trouble in certain parts of Bengal.

Soon after getting such information, the Mamata Banerjee government took immediate steps to avert deterioration of the law and order situation in Bengal.

She directed the police and the administration to keep a close watch on the situation, so that no untoward incident takes place. At the same time, she is spreading the message of tolerance, brotherhood and unity among the people of Bengal.

In many of her speeches, she has mentioned the tradition of peace and harmony in Bengal and requested people to be alert so that no one can ever become successful in disturbing the stable situation in the state.

She also urged netizens not to spread any message on social networking sites without proper verification.

The state government had prepared tableaus with the theme of communal harmony that moved across the state to create awareness among people. Even the theme of the tableau for the Republic Day parade in Kolkata was "Ekatai Sampriti".
