An inmate was stabbed at Presidency Correctional Home on Saturday by another inmate. The incident reportedly happened when two groups fought with each other face-to-face in front of the jail canteen and Shekh Mongal was stabbed from behind. Following this, the victim was rushed to the hospital.

The investigators learnt that one Kallu's gang and one Ramua's gang often involved each other in deadly fights over certain issues. It was a tiff which turned out to be a violent fight where both the gang members attacked each other.

A case was initiated by the Hastings Police Station. The cops, however, are investigating that how those inmates got sharp weapons inside the correctional house.

It may be mentioned that Happy Singh, an under-trial inmate was killed at the Presidency Correctional Home in mid-2014. Singh was the key accused in the Khadim abduction case. During a Yoga session inside the jail, Singh was attacked by another prisoner Nizamuddin. Singh's head was smashed by a brick after an altercation.

According to a source, suddenly a fight broke out between Kallu's and Ramua's gang. The other inmates had peacefully assembled in front of the canteen when the fight unexpectedly started. The other inmates moved from the place as the fight grew bigger. Reportedly, more gang members appeared there within few minutes.

Shekh Mongal, one of the inmates, was stabbed in the  melee. The investigators also learnt that the rivalry between two gangs is quite old and Saturday's fight probably broke out over some old issues that suddenly cropped up.

Police learnt that Ramua was a dreaded criminal whose nickname is Anna. He used to run an extortion network spread across South Howrah and Ramrajatala. On the other hand, Kallu used to run his extortion network at the Kolkata Port area. However, the authorities of the Presidency Correctional Home denied to comment on the incident on Saturday when they were contacted. A source, however, said that the jail authorities took this matter seriously and have started an inquiry about the reason of the incident.

It may also be mentioned, commonly referred as 'Old Alipore Jail', Presidency Correctional Home got the status of the first Central Prison in Bengal way back in 1864. Though few old structures inside this prison have already been reduced into ruins, the rest that are still surviving witnessed history being written by the luminaries who were imprisoned in this jail including Sri Aurobindo
Ghosh, Barindra Kumar Ghosh, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Kazi Nazrul Islam and many others.
