Kolkata: In a unique move, NRS Medical College and Hospital authorities have taken up a beautification drive within the hospital campus.

According to hospital sources, a model village would be set up around the waterbody situated inside the hospital.

There is also a plan to introduce boating in the waterbody.

Renovation and restoration works have already started to give it a new look.

The project will jointly be carried out by the state Health department and Public Works department (PWD). It would take around one year to complete the project, an official said.

The water body within the hospital campus remained in bad shape for a quite long time.

The state Health department has recently come up with an idea to renovate the waterbody and develop a model village within the hospital campus.

The relatives of the patient visiting the hospital can spend some time surrounded by nature. Once the project is completed, people visiting the hospital can take a stroll in and around the village.

It was learnt from the hospital sources that various plants will be sown around the water body. Grass would also be sown to provide the ambience of a real village. Huts would also be constructed around the waterbody. Concrete benches would be constructed so that people can take rest. There will be adequate arrangements of lights around the pond.

Among all other medical colleges in the city, NRS Medical College and Hospital has been selected for the project. The project will not only give a new look to the hospital but will also help people spend some time in seclusion.

Around 20 swans will be brought in to make the village more beautiful.

"Sowing of plants has already been initiated. Setting up the model village will beautify the hospital campus. The patients and their relatives visiting the hospital are often stressed. The proposed project will provide some sort of relief to these people. The PWD department will look after the model village once it is completed," a senior official of the hospital said.

It may be mentioned that Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) has also taken up a similar project of constructing a children's park with all the basic amenities outside the hematology department of the hospital so that children coming to the department with various ailments can spend some quality time playing.
