Kolkata: The Traffic department of Kolkata Police will not allow traffic flow at Belvedere Road in front of Alipore Zoological Gardens from Saturday night till Tuesday evening in connection with the construction of a foot overbridge.
"In connection with construction of the foot overbridge on Belvedere Road in front of Alipore Zoo, no vehicles will be allowed to ply along Belvedere Road (North and South bound) from AJC Bose Road side and National Library Avenue side from 8.30 pm on Saturday till 6.30 pm on Tuesday," a senior official of the Traffic department said.
It may be mentioned that the foot overbridge is being constructed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in PPP mode which will have modern amenities like escalator and CCTV. "The main structure of the bridge has been constructed at Dankuni which will be bought and installed. The 45-tonne structure has been constructed at another place to ensure that there is no disturbance to the animals in the zoo," a senior official of the PPP department of the KMC said.
The construction of the bridge started in the month of June last year and is entailing an investment of Rs 4 crore. The assistance from the structural engineering department of Jadavpur University has been taken for the construction. The bridge will be located at a height of 23 foot from the surface of the road. It may be mentioned that KMC has earmarked some spots in the city for construction of footbridges under PPP mode for the safety of pedestrians.
