New DGP to take over from June 1 as Purakayastha steps down

Kolkata: A 1985 batch IPS officer, Virendra, is going to take charge as the state's Director General of Police (DGP) from June 1. He will succeed Surajit Kar Purkayastha, who is also an IPS officer of the same batch. Purakayastha had become DGP in May 2016.
An electrical engineer from IIT Kharagpur, Purakayastha, who has a wide experience of working in different posts including Commissioner of the Kolkata Police, will continue as the state's Security Advisor, a post that has been newly created.
Purakayasthta will continue as the DGP till May 30, "in compliance with the order of the Supreme Court passed on June 22, 2006, on the basis of a civil writ petition, stating that the DG or IG of Police, West Bengal, shall hold office for not less than two years, irrespective of his date of superannuation."
Sources said Virendra will take charge as the new DGP on June 1. It may be mentioned that Virendra is the Director General of Police (Security) at present. It may be mentioned that Virendra had been continuing as the DGP (Security) for the past few years. It was on May 31, when he was made the Director General of Police (Armed Police). But within a short period of time, he was brought back to the post of DGP (Security) on June 12.
Virendra, who has also worked in the post of ADG (Security), is now going to be the new DGP of Bengal.
