Mound of earth collapses: Six labourers from N Dinajpur killed

BALURGHAT: In a tragic incident, six labourers hailing from North Dinajpur district died and three others were seriously injured after a massive mound of earth fell on them in a trench while laying fresh 4G cable in UP's Pilibhit on

Monday night.

Police said five of the six labourers died on the spot, while one succumbed to his injury immediately after reaching the hospital.

The bodies have kept in Bareilly district hospital, while the injured persons have been undergoing treatment in a private facility

in Bareilly.

The deceased were identified as Nazmul Haque, Nazim Ali, Keshar Ali, Mahirul Alam, Nazimuddin Ahmed and Hasan Ali. Three injured labourers identify as Razzaq Ali, Muzaffar Alam and Kurban Ali. All the deceased and injured labourers hail from Bariolghat at Itahar block and Raiganj block's Tagra, Elengia and Paschimpara areas of

North Dinajpur.

A magisterial inquiry into the incident has been initiated and the team has been directed to submit the report within a week, it has been learnt.

The incident occurred when at least 10 labourers were involved working inside the four-metre deep underground trench for

laying 4G cable.

Two of them managed to come out, while the rest got confined. The victims had been working for a Noida-based company and two local representatives of the said firm had been booked for

investigation.

Police have also lodged an FIR against unidentified persons u/s 304 (death by negligence) of IPC.

After receiving the news from the UP counterpart, North Dinajpur district administration has initiated measures to bring their bodies back and hand over them to their family members.
