A PhD scholar was attacked inside Botanical Garden at Shibpur in Howrah and valuables were snatched from her on Wednesday morning.
Police said that the woman is originally a resident of the city but now stays in Hyderabad for her work. She came to the city a few days ago with a plan to stay here for a few days. She visited the Botanical Garden on Wednesday morning after a long time.
She was attacked when she was taking a walk inside the garden. The miscreants had been following her for a long time. They stood in front of her and forced her to stop walking when she was passing through a deserted place in the garden.
They asked the woman to give them her gold chain and mobile phone. But the woman was not ready to handover the valuables to them. It led to heated exchange of words. One of the miscreants took out a razor and attacked the woman. She received injuries on her neck.
The woman was left helpless after receiving the injuries and the miscreants utilised the opportunity to take away the gold chain, mobile phone and her purse.
They fled before anyone could come to the spot. Later, other tourists and security personnel of the garden reached the spot hearing the woman's cries for help.
They informed the police. Policemen from Botanical Garden police station rushed to the spot and took her to a local hospital where she received necessary treatment.
The police initiated a probe in this connection and took down the statement of the woman. The police have collected footages of the CCTVs in the botanical garden. The investigating officers are going through the footages to identify the accused.
A police officer said it seems that the accused are
well aware of the area and they are frequent visitors at the garden.
The police have also spoken to some other visitors of the garden to know whether they had seen the youth fleeing after committing the crime.
