Kolkata: A man identified as Humayun Shaikh was held with firearms in a raid jointly conducted by officers of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Murshidabad district police and Burwan police station at Karalitala in Burwan on Sunday.
Police officers seized four 7mm pistols, 20 semi-finished pistols and 10 bullets from him. The semi-finished pistols were to be assembled in Kaliachak, before the delivery of the consignment to an unidentified person.
According to a source, police recently got a tip-off that a consignment of firearms will be brought to Kolkata from Bihar, which will eventually be delivered somewhere in Murshidabad.
Working on the information, cops discovered that Shaikh, a resident of Kaliachak, was involved in the firearm deal.
They kept an eye on him and police agents were told to follow him wherever went. Recently, the police were informed by their sources that Shaikh was going to Kolkata. He was spotted at the Esplanade bus terminus while he was boarding a bus to Kaliachak. Immediately, the Murshidabad Police was informed.
Before the bus could reach Murshidabad, a plan was hatched to arrest Shaikh.
A joint team comprising police personnel from the SOG of Murshidabad district police and Burwan police station intercepted the bus at Karalitala. During the search operation Shaikh was caught with the firearms.
He was immediately detained and taken to Burwan police station where he was arrested after a while.
According to police sources, Shaikh received the consignment at Howrah station which came from Munger in Bihar. His plan was to reach Kaliachak to deliver the consignment to someone.
Police are trying to find out the man to whom Shaikh had to hand over the firearms.
It is suspected that these firearms were being sent to Bangladesh through the
Indo-Bangla border in Murshidabad.
