Kolkata: The police are probing the role of some more leaders of the BJP in connection with the case in which people were allegedly cheated after giving money against assurance of LPG dealership under a scheme of the Central government.

This comes after the arrest of a leader of the party, Ranjeet Majumdar, on Saturday, based on a complaint lodged with Jorasanko police station.

The complaint was lodged by Ashoke Sarkar, a former BJP leader, alleging "criminal conspiracy" that was "hatched" by some "senior BJP and RSS leaders of West Bengal". He alleged that crores of rupees were collected from different people from all across the state after assuring help to get LPG dealership.

Based on the complaint, the police picked him up for interrogation and after a marathon session; Majumdar, who was earlier the good governance and Central state coordinator for the party, was arrested and a probe initiated.

It may be mentioned that the matter related to the alleged scam over the LPG dealership came to light in August and he was, however, subsequently removed from the post. The matter came to light after the complaint in this connection was lodged with Jorasanko police station on August 7 and a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on charges of cheating (420 IPC) and criminal conspiracy (120B IPC) were initiated.

Though the party's top brass had claimed that the arrest of Majumdar was politically motivated and the law will take its own course if anyone is found involved in any financial irregularities, according to sources in the Kolkata Police, the probe is on and some more leaders of the party are under scanner. It may be mentioned that the name of a leader has been mentioned in the FIR that was lodged by Sarkar.

When contacted Subhankar Sinha, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central), said that further investigation is on in this connection.

It may be mentioned that Dilip Ghosh, the state president of the party, could not be contacted for his comment.
