Police arrested eight persons, including the prime accused Sanatan Murmu on charges of killing two civic volunteers at Goaltore. The investigators revealed that the prime accused, a forest department employee had killed the civic volunteer – Amit Mahato, for vengeance.
Police learnt that Amit had taken money from Sanatan promising him that he will get his son a job as civic volunteer in the district. But he did not keep his word and refused to pay the money back to Sanatan.
Sanatan had conspired to kill Amit and had sought help from friends for this operation. They hired a woman to call up Amit at Goaltore's Kadashol crossing. Amit came at Kadashol crossing to meet the woman with his friend Sourav Mahato, who was also a civic police volunteer. Sanatan and his friends attacked Amit and hacked him to death on Saturday. Sourav tried to escape the spot but the assailants caught him and hacked him to death.
Police learnt that Amit had taken Rs 1.5 lakh which he refused to return. Sanatan, his friend Bapan Kisku and others made the plan at Bapan's house to murder Amit. They killed Sourav as he was the only eye-witness to the incident.
The SIM card which was used for calling up Amit at the spot was destroyed. Police could not find location of the cell phone tower. "We have interrogated Sanatan's two sons and got some important clues about the cases. Later, the prime accused and seven of his friends were arrested," said a cop.
