A youth died while taking a bath in river Hooghly when he was swept away by the currents on Sunday.
The incident took place at Tantipara area under Chatterjee Hat police station in Howrah on Sunday afternoon. The deceased, identified as
Somenath Saha (18), was a resident of Batra in Howrah. Police said that he went to take a bath there along with some of his friends.
Police said that Somenath used to bathe in the river regularly. Like every other day, the victim went for a bath with some of his childhood friends.
Eye-witnesses told the police that while swimming in the river, Somenath was suddenly swept away by the currents.
His friends who were also taking a bath started screaming for help when they saw that Somenath was being swept away by the strong currents.
Attracted by the screaming of the youth, some local residents rushed to bank of the river. Some boatmen also took part in the rescue operation.
After being informed the disaster management and fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot. Some of the boatmen also dropped a big fishing net near the point where the boy was swept away.
After fishing out the youth's body from the river, the local residents rushed him to Howrah District Hospital where the doctors pronounced him brought dead.
After being informed, police reached the spot and started a probe in this regard.
