CM Mamata meets Governor, discusses situation in the Hills

Update: 2017-06-14 17:52 GMT
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on Wednesday and discussed about the present situation in the Hills.

The Chief Minister went to meet the Governor on her way to Nabanna on Wednesday morning.

In another development related to the Hills, the secretary of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has been changed and the new executive director of GTA has been
brought in.

According to Raj Bhawan sources, the Chief Minister briefed the Governor about the present situation in Darjeeling and how the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) is creating trouble against the interest of the people in the Hills when the tourist destination had witnessed a record footfall in the last summer.

While reacting on the present situation in Darjeeling, Tripathi said on Tuesday that all the concerned authorities should sit together and discuss the matter to resolve the issue.

The Chief Minister is monitoring the entire situation in the Hills and the state government has taken all necessary steps to ensure safety of both tourists in Darjeeling and the "peace loving" local people.

The state government has also issued notifications to ensure that all government offices in the Hills remain open so that common people do not face inconvenience unnecessarily by not getting the required services. When the state government is trying its level best to keep the situation in the Hills normal by keeping the offices open, GJM supporters are keeping a tab on the situation and taking down details of the employees who have reported for work despite the GJM's attempts to bring everything to a standstill.

Senior IPS officers have been posted and the police are also taking necessary steps to ensure that the situation does not deteriorate further.

The Chief Minister had said while leaving Nabanna on Tuesday that the situation in Darjeeling is "under control".

IAS officer of 2007 batch C Murugan has become the new secretary of GTA. He was earlier posted as managing director of the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation. Murugan has been made the secretary of GTA by replacing Don Bosco Lepcha.

Lepcha, who is an IAS officer of 2001 batch, has been made the First LA Collectorate and Collectorate, Stamp Duty in Kolkata.

In place of Murugan, IAS officer of 2006 batch Tanmay Chakrabarty, who is at present the joint secretary of the state Tourism Department, will be holding the additional charge of the managing director of the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation.

Deepa P Priya, who is an IAS officer of 2011 batch, has been given the additional charge of executive director of GTA. She will continue to work as the chief executive officer of Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority.
