Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed new garbage bins across the city. The civic body has also requested residents to drop their garbage in the newly-installed waste bins from where it will be taken to the dumping ground at Mollar Bheri.

Around 100 such garbage bins were installed on the roadsides and the corporation is planning to introduce more in the near future. "We have already requested the residents to put their garbage in these new waste bins. Our trucks will carry the garbage from there to the dumping ground," said Devashis Jana, member, Mayor-in-Council (Sewerage and Solid Waste Management).

It may be mentioned that a comprehensive solid waste management scheme for Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation is underway. Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (NDITA) — the three ULBs off-load garbage at a site popularly known as Mollar Bheri.

BMC is also planning to introduce charges for the markets for garbage dumping. This matter was already discussed in the meeting but a final decision was not taken yet. It was discussed that all the markets would be renovated and the market committee would have to pay charges for dumping garbage.

It was also discussed to install 595 kg capacity bins in every market. Shopkeepers would dump their waste in this bin and the corporation staff would empty the bins once a day. The shopkeepers would be charged Rs 2 per day for this service.

The corporation has also instructed the garbage collectors to segregate waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. The pay package of sweepers was revised and they were taken under medical insurance policy as well.
In Mollar Bheri, there is no waste segregation system and the site is slowly getting saturated. The corporation is taking different steps to solve the problem.

It will be recalled that people started residing in Salt Lake from mid 1970s. There was no proper trenching ground. Later, it was decided that a trenching ground would be set up in Mollar Bheri.
