North 24 Parganas police on Sunday arrested a person on charges of killing his wife. The person hacked his wife to death a few months ago over dowry demand and escaped. The investigators arrested him on the basis of a complaint lodged by the deceased's family members.
Police learnt that Fazila Biwi was allegedly killed by her husband Shahjahan Molla a few months ago. Molla escaped the spot and took shelter at Gosaba in South 24 Parganas. A police team went there to arrest him from Ratanpur Village on Saturday night.
He was taken to Basirhat police station on Sunday for interrogation and was later produced before the Basirhat Sub Divisional Court.
The investigators learnt that Fazila Biwi was Shahjahan Molla's first wife. It was not the first time that the accused person had killed over dowry. A similar incident had happened in past when the first wife of Molla was also allegedly killed by him. Police learnt that the accused person was trying to marry a widow in Gosaba. This woman promised him 50 per cent share of her property after marriage.
