Five persons were injured when a private car rammed into another car in New Town on Saturday night. Police said the incident took place near the New Town bus stand when one of the cars was trying to overtake the other.

"Among the five injured persons, one was the driver and other four were employees of a call-centre. They were all taken to a hospital," said a police officer.

The condition of three of the accident victims was said to be serious but the other two were discharged from the hospital on Sunday morning.

"One car, with a 'government of India' sticker on it, was trying to overtake another car carrying four call-centre employees when the incident happened. The call-centre car was badly damaged and the other car turned turtle," said a police officer.

Eye-witnesses of the incident informed the police that the cars were moving at a high speed. They heard a loud sound, signaling a collision between the two cars.

"We helped the police officers rescue the people trapped in the cars and rushed the victims to the hospital," eye-witnesses said. Investigators suspect that both the drivers were intoxicated at the time of the accident. The injured call centre employees reportedly told the police that their driver did not look normal while driving the car.

The other driver was also trying to race with the call-centre car, a source said.

"The information regarding the registration of the cars will be verified. The owners will be called to the police station soon," said a police officer. He added: "One car was used for government work and other was used for commercial purposes. We need to check out all the details relating to the daily uses of these cars." Bidhannagar City Police are concerned about the frequent incidents of rash driving in New Town. However, the number of such incidents has gone down over time. The city police have also taken various road safety measures and successfully promoted the 'Safe Drive, Save Life' campaign.

"The state government's Safe Drive Save Life campaign has helped us spread awareness among the drivers," the officer added.
