Monteswar hit-and-run accused yet to be arrested

A day has passed but the Monteswar police are yet to arrest Hamidullah Chaudhury, son of Chaudhuri Md. Hedayatullah, former CPI(M) MLA from Monteswar who mowed down four persons with his speeding car.

Police are conducting raids in various parts of the district since the incident took place. They are tracking the phone of the accused to determine his location. His associate, who was accompanying Hamidullah in his car and was later arrested, told the police that the there was another friend in the car who had left the vehicle before the accident occurred.

Seikh Mohammad Sayed, who was travelling with the accused, was injured in the accident. After being given primary treatment, Sayed was arrested by the police.
Meanwhile, the tribal people in the locality staged a demonstration on Sunday at Monteswar police station demanding immediate arrest of the accused. Of the four victims killed in the accident, some were tribals.

The agitation was lifted after senior police officers assured them that the accused would soon be booked. 

Police said they had come to know during the interrogation that the accused was heavily intoxicated at the time of the accident. He had consumed alcohol at a bar in Nabadwip in Nadia and was on his way home. 

On the way back, the car had first hit a motorbike, following which the accused sped up his vehicle and hit the tractor in which the victims were travelling.
