The Controller of Examinations, University of Gour Banga, Sanatan Das resigned from his post on Wednesday. The Vice-Chancellor of the university,
Gopalchandra Misra said that he had received Das' resignation letter, wherein the Controller of Examinations had specifically mentioned his illness as the cause of his decision to resign.

However, an university source claimed that Das was dissatisfied with some recent incidents that had taken place at the university and had gone against him. The source also claimed that some people had conspired against him.

Some students had reportedly been asked to sit in the balcony of Malda College (under University of Gour Banga) during an examination in April. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Education Minister Partha Chatterjee were angered by the incident after watching it on television.

Some university insiders believed that Das had been responsible for the mismanagement that had led to the fiasco. However, the Vice-Chancellor denied any involvement of the state government in Das' removal from his post.

Last year, agitating students had gheraoed the Vice-Chancellor over some demands. The state Education minister had reacted swiftly after the incident and said that the students' demands would not be met. Later, the students had withdrawn their protest.
