Tension in Bhangar after cops arrest farmer

Update: 2017-05-12 18:02 GMT
Tension broke out at South 24 Parganas' Bhangar yet again after police arrested a villager. The villagers alleged that police arrested Kismat Ali Mollah, a mango farmer, without any reason. The local source claimed that some villagers even hurled bombs in the locality early on Friday protesting the arrest.

"The clash actually broke out near the Power Grid area as some villagers started hurling bombs there. A large police force went there to control the situation," a police source said.

"Mollah is innocent. He went to the market to sell mangos but police arrested him from there," a village alleged.

According to a source, police booked the person on the basis of specific complaint, but the villagers demanded that Mollah was not involved in any clash.

It will be recalled that the state government decided to shut down the Power Grid project at Bhangar following massive protests by the local villagers a few months ago.

On Friday, the villagers blocked the roads and damaged some local offices to show their protest against arrest of Kismat Ali Mollah.

"South 24 Parganas district magistrate assured us not to arrest any villager. So police should not arrest any villagers in fake cases," a villager alleged.
