Family members of a patient who died of alleged medical negligence at Matri Mangal Pratisthan Hospital on Rabindra Sadan on Thursday went on a rampage, ransacking a portion of the private nursing home.
The incident triggered tension among the patients and staff members of the nursing home on Thursday morning after news of the patient's death reached her family members. A heated altercation broke out between the victim's relatives and the staff members of the hospital.
Police said that Debendra Yadav, originally a resident of Chapra in Bihar, took his pregnant wife Menoka Yadav to Matri Mangal Pratisthan on May 4. After primary treatment, the patient was admitted to the hospital where she delivered a baby girl the next day. Since then, she had been under treatment at the hospital as her condition was not stable. On Thursday morning, the patient was suffering from respiratory distress and her condition began to deteriorate fast. She died at around 10 am on Thursday.
The family members of the victim alleged that there was no doctor at the nursing home when she died. As the news of her death spread, the family members and relatives of the deceased rushed to the nursing home and started ransacking a portion of it alleging negligence. An irate mob also gheraoed the doctors and nursing staff of the hospital, alleging that the patient died of medical negligence as she had not been properly treated. After being informed about the incident, a huge contingent of police rushed to the spot and pacified the mob. The demonstration was halted after the police assured the protestors that the matter would be looked into.
Nursing home authorities have, however, denied allegations of medical negligence. A senior official of the nursing home said that the patient had refused to take oxygen. The patient's family members had also been advised to shift her to another hospital as the nursing home had no Intensive Care Unit (ICU). As the patient's condition deteriorated, she needed an urgent transfer to another hospital but according to the hospital authorities, the family did not take any steps in this regard. Police have started a probe in the matter.
