Mystery shrouds the death of an elderly woman whose body was recovered from inside her room at her home in the Ramnagar area of Uluberia in Howrah on Thursday. Police have recovered a sharp weapon that was lying inside her room.

According to the preliminary investigation, police suspect that the victim might have been murdered with the weapon which was left by the perpetrator on the scene of the crime after the incident.

The victim, Uma Panja, was found dead inside her room by the local residents. The victim's family members have said that they have no idea how she died. The locals reported the incident to the police, who reached the spot and immediately initiated an investigation into the matter. The family members of the deceased told the police that she had gone outside earlier that day but had returned home safely sometime later. They claimed to be unsure if she had quarrelled with anybody while away. The locals, however, informed the police that there were long-standing differences between the victim and her daughter-in-law.  Police have collected the weapon and sent it for a forensic test.

The authorities have started a detailed probe into the matter. They are trying to determine if the family quarrel had led to the murder or had the victim had committed suicide. However, the police have not ruled out the possibility of a foul play as numerous injuries were found on the victim's body. The nature of the injuries suggests that the victim might not have committed suicide. Police have detained the woman's son and daughter-in-law for interrogation.
