A court in Nadia on Thursday awarded life imprisonment to an accused for hurling acid on a girl who eventually succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. The court has also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 50,000.

Police said that the convict, Imam Ali Mondal, a resident of Hashkhali in Nadia attacked the girl after she refused his proposal for marriage. Ali, who was already a married man at the time, had proposed marriage to the victim. However, when the girl came to know that Ali was married, she refused to enter into any relationship with him.

This apparently infuriated the accused so much that he wanted to take revenge on the girl and waited for an opportunity. A few days after his proposal was refused, he went to her house and threw acid on her.

The victim's mother, who was with her in the room, was also injured in the incident. The girl suffered critical burn injuries and was rushed to a district hospital. She was later shifted to the NRS Medical College and Hospital as her condition deteriorated. Despite the efforts of the doctors, the girl could not be saved as she had suffered nearly 90 percent burns all over her body. The victim's mother, however, survived with minor injuries.

Family members of the victim had lodged a complaint at the local police station on the basis of which the police started a case and arrested the accused. Another person, Nepal Saha, from whom the accused had bought the acid was also arrested in connection to this incident. The court has, however, cleared Nepal of all charges.
