Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will constitute an e-cell at every borough in the city to create awareness about e-tendering for contractors involved in 'small' projects.
The state Finance department has long made it mandatory for all government departments, including urban local bodies, to select contractors through e-tenders for execution of any project that involves an expenditure of over Rs 5 lakhs.
"The state government has made e tendering compulsory to ensure transparency in carrying out projects. I have already passed orders for formation of an e cell at every single borough. This cell will cause awareness and will help the contractors involved in projects that entail small expense to take part in e tendering process," said Mayor Firhad Hakim.
KMC has till date done e tendering for 4111 projects and have had a much better performance in execution of e tenders than any other urban local bodies .
"We have been ranked in A plus category by Crisil for the past few years which is a clear evidence of our good performance in e tendering," said Hakim.
It may be mentioned that some municipalities in the state has seen delay in e tenders and state Municipal Affairs department has ordered probe into such delay.
However, there has been hardly any such instance in the case of KMC.
The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has also given 'True
and Fair' certificate to the KMC when it comes to execution of e tendering.
Hakim asserted that e tendering is the most modern process of roping in contractors for various projects and the procedure is followed in most parts of the country.
"The e tendering process is swift and most importantly ensure transparent . It is when some
insiders try to extend favours to certain companies in tenders when there is a delay," a senior KMC official said.
