KMC to intensify drives against mosquito-borne diseases

Kolkata: The Health wing of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will intensify its drives against mosquito-borne diseases in Kolkata.

Atin Ghosh, the newly appointed Deputy Mayor, said the civic authorities will identify zones where the outbreak of dengue is more than other parts of the city. Ghosh said Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has asked him to carry on with his portfolio of Member, Mayor-in-Council (Health).

Improving the healthcare system of KMC has been Ghosh's priority ever since he became a councillor in 1985. Dr Subodh Dey of Forward Block was the then Member, Mayor-in-Council (Health).

Almost in all the monthly meetings, Ghosh used to raise the issue of improving the maternity centres of KMC. The centres were in shambles in those days. After becoming MIC (Health), Ghosh has improved the same.

Over the years, he has worked day and night to improve the labs of KMC. Fifteen dengue detection centres have been set up in the city. He accompanies the KMC teams that visit houses and government establishments to ensure that garbage has been cleaned regularly.

Regular meetings are held in the boroughs where senior officials of Solid Waste Management department and Building department are present, to make the drives against dengue more effective.

Ghosh said intense drives will be conducted to prevent spreading of the disease. Once the zones are identified, it will be easier for KMC to work.

He said that the priority of KMC is to look after the economically challenged people and in every ward, doctors sit regularly and treat all kinds of diseases.

"It is unfortunate people think that since KMC gives medical service free of cost, the diseases will not be cured. We have doctors who are given periodic training in tropical diseases. Even patients suffering from Chronic Obstructed Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) are treated at the ward health centres. KMC will lodge drives to inform people about the health centres," he maintained.
