Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will be soon enhancing paid night car parking spaces in the city, to facilitate car owners. The move of the parking wing of the civic body comes in the wake of their good response to the drive against night car parking that had started last year.
"The people are going for legal parking during night after our drive and the parking areas allocated for night parking are full. In most of the lots we have found more vehicles than we had proposed. So we have decided to enhance space and the proposed enhancement list has been circulated among all the 25 agencies that manage night parking," a senior official of the Parking department
said.
The agencies have been asked to file their objections if they find that the parking spaces are not in order, to the Chief Manager (Parking) by October 27.
"If we find that their objection is reasonable we will go for reduction of space. Otherwise, we will terminate the concerned agency and go for a fresh one," the official added.
The car parking spaces as proposed by the civic body, will take the number of cars to 2,555 up from the existing 2,181 at present.
There are as many as 193 night parking lots in the city. A visit to these parking lots by the officials of the KMC from September 4 to 14 has revealed that there are around 4,048 vehicles parked in the lots, a number which is much higher than the expectation of KMC.
"We have found that though the lots have space for 10, 15 or 30 vehicles, as many as 40 to 45 cars have been parked at extremely close proximity in these lots," the official maintained.
It may be mentioned that the KMC had earlier decided to enhance parking space during the day, after it had found that they are not getting proper fees collected from all the vehicles parked in their designated lots.
