Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to come up with sanitary pad vending machines at all its health centres across the city. The civic body has health centres at 44 wards.

"As a mark of respect to mothers and sisters on the occasion of International Women's Day today (Friday) we have decided to set up sanitary napkin vending machines at every health centre under our jurisdiction. The service can be availed at a nominal price of Re 1. The move will ensure better health and hygiene for women," Mayor Firhad Hakim said.

It may be mentioned that the number of people visiting KMC health centres is increasing by leaps and bounds as the Health department of the civic body is taking measures from time to time to boost the infrastructure of its health units. In 2018, KMC health centres had catered to 22 lakh patients.

This apart, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation will take steps to renovate and revamp more than 60 water bodies in the city soon after the elections. "The election dates are expected to be announced soon so, we will not be able to commence work during this period. We will complete the tender process and formalities for allotment of work order during this time. So, once the elections are over work will start immediately," a senior official of KMC said.

Swapan Samaddar, member Mayor-in-Council (Environment ), held a meeting with officials in this regard in presence of Municipal Commissioner Khalil Ahmed.

"We have got the approval of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board and we are waiting for the administrative approval from the state

Municipal Affairs department for renovation of these waterbodies. The DPR for the renovation projects has been

sent sometime back," Samaddar said.
