Kolkata: Some students of Jadavpur University and Presidency University were allegedly beaten up while they were distributing leaflets in front of Surendranath College in Sealdah on Monday morning.

The leaflets were being circulated in protest against the Central government's alleged attempts for privatisation of education and alleged irregularities with admission in state colleges.

A student of Presidency University said that they are organising a convention on August 31 to voice their demands and accordingly, were distributing the leaflets.

Suddenly, they were stopped by some miscreants who threatened them of dire consequences if they continued with the distribution. When they protested, they were beaten up.

The victims staged a protest in front of Muchipara police station and lodged a written complaint.

"None of the ones who attacked us are known to us. We are also not aware of which organisation they belong to," said one of the students who were assaulted.

The students have been doing a similar exercise at a number of colleges in the city for the last few days, to ensure good attendance at their convention.

Trinamool Chatra Parishad vice-president Mani Shankar Mondal said: "I have received information that some students of Surendranath Girls' College were beaten up by some students of some radical group. The injured students have been admitted at NRS Medical College Hospital."

It may be mentioned that Surendranath College was in the news last month, over alleged irregularities with admission.
