Miscreants threw chilli powder in the eyes of a jeweller and snatched a bag full of cash and gold ornaments at Panduaon in Burdwan on Saturday night.
The jeweller was attacked by some motorbike-borne miscreants while he was on his way back home. The condition of the eyes of that jeweller was critical. He was taken to a hospital.
Amit Karmakar, the victim, was leaving for home after closing his jewellery shop on Saturday night at Shantasil Market. The miscreants attacked on Karmakar at Baroyaritala on Kulti Road.
They suddenly stopped their bike in front of him and two out of five miscreants threw chilli powder in Karmakar's eyes. The investigators learnt that the bag which was taken away by the miscreants contained Rs 20,000 cash and jewellery worth Rs 50,000.
Police have started an investigation on the basis of the complaint lodged by the jeweller. The sleuths suspected that those involved were local criminals and lodged a pre-planned attack on the jeweller.
The local residents believe that the area has become vulnerable to crime. "There are some points on Kulti Road where criminals and anti-socials operate freely. But many people take that road to reach home. Police should take a look at those areas," said a local resident.
