Kolkata: The state Irrigation department will carry out an assessment of all its installations situated near the areas bordering the neighbouring states.

The move has been undertaken to avoid any further incident similar to what happened at Massanjore near the Bengal-Jharkhand border. There was another incident at the border areas between Bengal and Odisha.

Besides carrying out the assessment, the state Irrigation department is also taking necessary administrative steps to avoid recurrence of such incidents at any of its installations near the border areas.

State Irrigation minister Soumen Mahapatra said: "We are well aware of all our installations including those in the border areas. Despite being well conversant with the situation at all the places, we are once again assessing the present situation at all the points."

He further said that at the same time, all necessary steps are being taken through the administration to avoid recurrence of such incidents.

"We are taking all necessary steps," said Mahapatra, adding that respective district magistrates are taking necessary administrative steps wherever there are installations in the border areas.

It may be recalled that in the beginning of August, the work to paint the hydropower generating Massanjore Dam in blue and white was stopped by some people from Jharkhand and the Biswa Bangla logo on the dam was also replaced with that of Jharkhand.

The incident took place despite the fact that the Irrigation and Waterways department of Bengal government carries out the maintenance work of the dam, even though it is in Jharkhand. An FIR was also lodged in this connection. Later, the matter had got resolved following discussions between the district magistrate of Birbhum and her counterpart in Jharkhand.

In another incident, a signboard put up by the state government near the Bengal-Odisha border was pulled down by the authorities from Odisha. Now, the state Irrigation department is taking all necessary steps to avoid such incidents in future.
