Heavy showers break last 10 years' record of spring rains

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata recorded 80 mm rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday, which is an all time record of rains in spring in the last 10 years.

In early years, the month of March recorded 35.2 mm rainfall, which was highest in the record of RMC Kolkata.

But double the amount of rainfall was already recorded in Wednesday and Thursday. The city also witnessed thunderstorm on Friday evening which may result in the rainfall surpassing 100 mm, the weathermen predicted.

Gangetic Bengal, including Kolkata witnessed incessant rain and thundershowers on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

In a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Thursday, the city has recorded a whopping 43 mm of rainfall.

"So far, the city has recorded 93 mm of rain, which is the highest rainfall in recorded in entire month of March in the last 10 years. However, this does not stop here, as weathermen are predicting more rain and thundershowers for Kolkata," Skymetweather, a private forecasting agency gave details.

The trough extended from Assam up to South Coastal Andhra Pradesh across Gangetic Bengal. The weather scientists of RMC Kolkata and some private agencies predicted that the weather conditions will likely remain the same for another 24 hours.

The weather scientists explained that the city had already exceeded 35.2 mm rainfall.

The temperature dropped on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with it hovering around 27 degree Celsius.

On Friday evening, the city witnessed heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning. Till the afternoon though, it was bright and sunny. "We are really enjoying the unexpected rainfall this season. It is quite different from the any other spring season. But I am praying to the almighty so that we can celebrate Dol properly," said a college girl.

The city's weather has been really hot and humid a few days ago. A mild chill was felt early in the morning on Friday.
