Govt mulling sports policy to uplift athletes of Bengal: Mamata

Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee government is planning to introduce a sports policy to benefit athletes.

While leaving Nabanna on Friday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said: "We are planning to introduce a sports policy in the state."

While speaking about the proposed policy, Banerjee stated that it will be of great help for athletes. "Necessary support will be given to those who will perform well in Commonwealth Games so that they can take part in Asiad. Similarly, those who will perform well in Asiad, will be provided with necessary support to ensure that they can participate in Olympics," said the Chief Minister.

The sports policy will be introduced with an aim to ensure that more athletes can take part in the international level.

This comes at the time when the state government has already taken a series of initiatives to improve infrastructure for sports and culture in the state. World class infrastructure has been developed in North Bengal where athletes can go for regular practice without having to travel to Kolkata for the same.

The state government has also taken up a project to develop a sports city at Dumurjola in Howrah. Moreover, the Chief Minister has also ensured financial support to local clubs to promote sports.

The state government has already announced an award of Rs 10 lakh and also offered a job to Swapna Barman for her success at the Asian Games. Banerjee also spoke to her mother after she became successful in the Asian Games.

The Chief Minister will be leaving for her North Bengal tour on Monday. She will be attending a state level programme on Teachers' Day in Darjeeling. If Swapna returns to Kolkata on August 3, she will be felicitated by the Chief Minister at the Teachers' Day programme in Darjeeling.

It may be mentioned that the state government would also take necessary steps to ensure that Swapna gets a home in Kolkata itself. It will help her avail better infrastructure for her practice.
