Kolkata: Tension was triggered at Palashipara in Nadia on Tuesday morning, after a school student was injured when a goods vehicle collided with his bicycle head-on. Locals allegedly manhandled the driver of the offending goods vehicle. When police went to the spot, they were attacked as well. A police van was also set on fire.
According to locals, Rana Mollah, a student of class VIII was going to school on his bicycle. All of a sudden, a goods vehicle loaded with coal hit the bicycle as it came on the wrong lane. As a result, Mollah fell on the road and sustained severe injuries. He was immediately rushed to Palashipara Hospital and later shifted to Shaktinagar District Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, locals allegedly detained the driver of the goods vehicle and started beating him up. Some of the agitators started vandalising the vehicle as well. Upon receiving the news, police personnel from Palashipara police station rushed to the spot and saved the accused driver from the violent mob. Following this, the agitators attacked the police. When they retaliated, locals allegedly started pelting stones at the police personnel.
To save themselves, the police had to back off and taking advantage of that a police van was vandalized and then set on fire. Police personnel took shelter at a Panchayat office in the locality. Meanwhile, reinforcement arrived, rescued the police personnel and controlled the situation. Till Tuesday night, no one has been arrested.
