Kolkata: A 12-year-old girl from Panskura in East Midnapore committed suicide by consuming poison on Sunday night.
The family members of the girl told the police that the victim, Moumita Murmu, (12) took the drastic step after they refused to give her a new mobile phone.
Police have started a detailed probe into the incident. The body of the girl has been sent to the Tomluk Hospital for an autopsy.
Murmu was a resident of Arjunda village of Panskura. The police said the victim had asked her parents — Biren Murmu and Monu Murmu —to buy her a mobile phone.
They told her that they would not be able to fulfill her demand as they did not have enough money to buy a new phone. But the girl refused to listen to them and insisted on buying a mobile phone.
Her parents could never imagine that she might commit suicide following the incident. On late Sunday night, the parents heard the girl screaming in pain inside her room.
They rushed her to the Panskura Superspecialty Hospital. The doctors at the hospital tried their best but failed to save her life. According to the hospital sources the victim consumed poison in sufficient quantity. A family member of the victim told the police that the girl was rebuked by her parents.
The police have initiated a probe in this regard.
