Kolkata: Remembering the brutal Nirbhaya gang-rape case in Delhi on its fifth year, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday called for making a safe society.
"Remembering #Nirbhaya on the fifth anniversary of brutal Delhi incident. We cannot compensate her loss but let us resolve to keep our society safe," Banerjee tweeted.
The 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally gang-raped inside a moving bus in Delhi on December 16, 2012, which led to her death due to internal injuries 13 days later in a Singapore hospital.
The rapists pounced on the young woman who had boarded the bus with her male friend to go home after seeing a movie.
After committing the crime, they dumped both on the side of a road. Later, some onlookers alerted the police. The sheer brutality of the crime led to nationwide revulsion and street protests.
The brutality of the incident left the entire nation in so much shock that people came out on the streets to protest against sexual violence against women.
According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for
2016-17, Delhi remains at the top
of the list when it comes to the
highest crime rate (160.4 percent) compared to the national average rate of 55.2 percent.
The Capital reported nearly 40 percent of rape cases (2,155 cases of rape, 669 cases of stalking and 41 cases of voyeurism) during the period.
Now, it needs to be seen when the four accused in the case would be executed as asked by the Apex Court.
Soon after coming to power, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took all necessary measures by giving priority to ensure safety and security of women in Bengal. Her government has set up women police stations in most parts of the state which has helped to check such incidents massively.
Moreover, fast track courts have also been set up so that a victim gets justice at the earliest.
Most importantly, it was the brainchild of the Chief Minister to introduce a project to provide self defence training to girls studying in schools so that they are also capable of safeguarding themselves against any untoward situation.
The Chief Minister had named the training programme "Sukanya" and the programme in different schools and colleges in the city and its surrounding areas is being carried out successfully by the Kolkata Police.
The project has also been taken up by Howrah City Police and Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
