Five persons were injured in a clash that broke out between the Congress and Trinamool Congress activists at Berhampore municipality on Thursday morning when Congress workers and leaders were organising a demonstration.
A huge contingent of police and Rapid Action Force jawans rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Altogether five members from both the sides suffered injuries in the incident.
The clash broke out when the Congress activists took out a rally and ended it in front of the municipality. They gathered there to submit a deputation to meet certain demands. Trouble broke out when Trinamool Congress activists also took out another rally.
A heated altercation broke out between the two groups. The situation soon turned ugly as both the groups clashed with each other injuring members from both the groups. The situation was so tense that the police had to resort to lathicharge to quell the mob.
The incident triggered tension in the area. Normal activities of the municipality were affected following the incident. There was police deployment in and around the Berhampore municipality on Thursday as Congress' rally was scheduled to take place.
As the clash broke out, senior police officers of the district rushed to the spot to control the situation. Police said that among the injured, there were some employees of the municipality.
Some of the injured persons were taken to a hospital for treatment. Both the political parties have accused their rival party for fueling the violence. Congress activists, however, blamed that the Trinamool Congress-backed goons had attacked their party office situated in the vicinity and damaged it completely. District Trinamool Congress leaders have denied the allegation and police have started a probe in this regard.
