Firhad Hakim asks officers to initiate sound-&-light show at Tagore Memorial
Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will examine the feasibility of sound-and-light show at the Tagore Memorial, just adjacent to the Nimtala crematorium. Councillors under Borough II expressed their desire before Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday for coming up with a light and sound show facilities at the Memorial and the latter directed his concerned officials to work on the proposal. The Mayor held administrative review meeting of Borough II on Saturday to speed up work of various projects being carried out in the area.
Rabindranath Tagore was cremated at the North Calcutta burning ghat in 1941 and the Tagore Memorial in the compound of the crematorium was upgraded few years back. The Memorial has been illuminated with decorative street lamps and the ground has been paved with granite. "Many people pay a visit to the Tagore Memorial after sun down which is located just beside the Ganga. The light and sound show will surely attract more people," said Sadhan Saha, chairman of Borough II, who is also a councillor of ward 16 of the civic body.
The proposal for decorating the statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at Shyambazar Five Point Crossing with lights was also placed at the meeting following which the Mayor gave necessary instructions to the concerned officials to take steps regarding the same.
"Previously, we could reach up to Howrah Bridge via Strand Bank Road that passes alongside the crematorium but now there are encroachments and the road has been cut off. The possibility of reviving the route was also placed at the meeting," a councillor under Borough II said.
Along with Hakim, Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh who is the councillor of ward 11 under Borough II was also present.
