Kolkata: A fire broke out inside the godown of Calcutta Jute Mill on Tuesday afternoon that was stacked with inflammable materials. Some of the workers while working in the godown spotted the fire and immediately raised an alarm.
The workers immediately rushed out of the godown situated on Narkeldanga Main Road under Phoolbagan police station area.
The fire services were informed and immediately four fire tenders rushed to the spot. Locals also joined the fire fighting operation and the flames were brought under control in a little more than an hour.
A senior official of the fire department said they received the call about the fire at around 2.30 pm in the afternoon and found that the first shift in the jute mill had ended and the second shift was about to begin.
"Many people had already come out of the godown when they saw fire as it was the end of their shift. The others who were inside also came out. We could start the fire fighting operation immediately as no one was trapped inside," a senior official of the Fire department said.
The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained but some costly production machines were gutted. "The fire may be triggered from a short circuit. The forensic examination will ascertain the real cause of the fire," the official added.
Another fire incident was reported from a footwear godown situated on the first floor of G+2 building on Gobindo Chandra Dhar Lane under Burrabazar police station area. Two fire tenders were pressed into service that extinguished the fire in less than an hours time. There were no reports of any injury or casualty in the incident.
