Kolkata: Fire broke out on the third floor of a five-storied building in Kasba on Wednesday morning. Four fire tenders were pressed into action and the fire was controlled almost after an hour. One fire brigade official fell sick due to the smoke and was admitted later at Ruby General Hospital.

According to locals, on Wednesday morning at around 9 am, they noticed smoke coming out of the third floor of a five-storied building located at 165, Rajdanga Main Road. Sources informed that the fire broke out in the office of a renowned jewellery merchant. They immediately alerted the occupants of the building and helped them evacuate. Police and fire brigade were informed as well.

Soon, four fire tenders reached the spot and started spraying water on the third floor. Though firefighters were spraying water, the entire floor was filled with thick black smoke. After a few moments, some firefighters went up to the second floor with water jet hose. While spraying water, a firefighter identified as Debabrata Chakraborty, who is the sub-officer of Pragati Maidan fire station, felt breathless due to the smoke. He was immediately rushed to Ruby General Hospital on a Kolkata Accident Rescue and Medical Assistance (KARMA) ambulance of Kolkata Police and was subsequently admitted there.

At around 10.05 am, the fire was controlled but due to the heat, firefighters kept on spraying water to cool down the walls and floors. It was assumed that the fire might have occurred due to an electrical short-circuit but it is yet to be confirmed by the technical experts of the fire brigade. The extent of damage is yet to be ascertained.
