Ex-boxer heckled for stopping youths from drinking at public place

Kolkata: A former boxer from Shibpur in Howrah was heckled along with his son by some drunken youths after the victim protested against their drinking habits at a public place.

The incident took place on Sunday evening when the victim, Amit Samanta, found some youths consuming alcohol on the street outside his house. As the accused were shouting, the victim stepped out of his house and asked them to leave the place.

The accused youths then proposed Samanta to have some liquor with them.

The victim's house is situated close to the Shibpur bus stand. The victim reacted sharply to the misbehaviour of the youths. This further infuriated the youths so much that they turned abusive and hurled expletives at the victim.

When Samanta's son came out to rescue him, the accused youths threatened them with dire consequences. Samanta's son was allegedly threatened for life. Victim's family members also alleged that the youths also threatened them by saying that the women members of the family would be raped if they raise the matter with law enforcement agencies.

They also alleged that the accused ransacked a portion of their house later on Sunday night. The local residents and the victim's family members staged a protest in the area questioning how the miscreants can drinking at a public place in and create nuisance in the area, which is so close to the state secretariat. They also alleged that the police did not take prompt action. The family members lodged a complaint with the police.
