Dy Mayor graces bird fair in North Kolkata

Kolkata: A unique three-day fair called 'Pakhir Mela' was held in Ward 17 in North Kolkata which concluded on January 6.

The initiative was taken by Trinamool Congress councillor Mohan Kumar Gupta which was held at Kasi Bose Lane Park. The purpose of the fair was to attract people, particularly the younger generation, and impart awareness about nature and its preservation.

There were birds from different countries including Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and the West Indies.

There were birds from the Himalayas and North-Eastern states as well. Different varieties of marine life were an added attraction. Long queues of visitors were seen at the entrance on all the three days.

Atin Ghosh, Deputy Mayor, also visited the fair. It may be mentioned that it was Mala Roy, chairperson of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), was the first to organise the fair in South Kolkata nearly a decade ago. Taking cue from its success, it is now organised in almost every area to create awareness about preservation and conservation of nature.
