Kolkata: The business partner of builder Sekhar Poddar, who was shot at in Dum Dum Park on Saturday, claimed his partner was attacked as they refused to give extortion money to dreaded criminal Babu Nayak.
Sources informed that Babu is implementing the orders from his leader Rajesh Nayak, who is currently in judicial custody.
According to the sources, Rajesh is trying to dominate the area as he used to do in the past. Though Rajesh is in judicial custody, he somehow manages to keep a strong contact with his henchmen to issue orders.
According to the police, Poddar's business partner Chiradeep Roy said some ago one Babu called them over phone and demanded Rs 5 lakh as extortion. However, both the developers refused to pay the said amount.
The investigating officers came to know that Babu was not present at the incident spot on Saturday. It is suspected that Babu might have fled to Odisha where he establishments. Even Rajesh has establishments somewhere in Odisha. He used to be a Panchayat Pradhan there.
While probing the case, the sleuths have interrogated several persons and detained three on Sunday but none from police admitted any news of detention.
On the other hand, MLA Bidhannagar Sujit Bose alleged that local BJP leader Piyush Kanoria is behind this. Kanoria refused and claimed he was also a target of Babu in the recent past.
Kanoria claimed that he does not know Babu personally but in a photograph, it could be seen that Kanoria is hugging Babu.
The sleuths are keeping a strong eye on Kanoria's recent activities. His call details will also be checked.
