Kolkata: A Light Goods Vehicle (LGV) driver was killed after a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) collided head on at Kamduni More in Rajarhat on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the locals, the LGV was going towards Deganga with some goods. At the same time, an empty HGV was moving towards Rajarhat at high speed. It was alleged that at Kamduni More, the HGV driver overtook a car in front of him and thus, he came in front of the LGV.
Being a witness to the incident, the locals ran to the spot and tried to rescue the LGV driver who was later identified as Raju Mondal.
But as the LGV was badly damaged, Mondal could not be rescued. Later, he was brought out from the driving seat using a gas-cutter and was rushed to a local hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The driver of the LGV fled the scene immediate after the accident.
Meanwhile, in another incident, New Town police arrested one Naresh Chandra Samaddar, alias Nantu, for allegedly possessing banned drug codeine phosphate liquid mixture late on Tuesday night.
According to sources, the police recently got a tip-off about a person who was scheduled to hand over some illegal drug to someone in New Town. Working on the information, the sleuths came to know that the hand-over would take place on Wednesday night somewhere around New Town bridge. Based on the information, a police team went searching for any suspicious movement in the area. In the meantime, when the police van was approaching the New Town bridge, a person was seen waiting for someone in the dark.
When a police personnel asked him to come to the van, he allegedly started running. Immediately, two police personnel chased him. After almost half-a-kilometre chase, the cops were able to get hold of him.
When they searched the bag the suspect was carrying, 2 litres of codeine phosphate liquid mixture was found. He was arrested on charges of contravention in relation to manufactured drugs and preparations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He has been remanded to judicial custody after being produced before Barasat Court on Wednesday.
