Depression drives 16-year-old to kill self at New Town

Kolkata: A Class X student from New Town committed suicide by jumping off from a high-rise building near Nazrul Tirtha on Saturday night.

According to police, on Saturday at around 7:55 pm the girl told her mother that she was going out for a stroll in the area. She failed to locate her daughter after half an hour when the girl did not return.

After an hour, she heard people shouting outside their apartment. When she went to check what had happened, she found her daughter lying in a pool of blood. Neighbours informed her that the girl had jumped from the roof of the building.

Immediately, she was rushed to Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital where she was declared brought dead. Later, police was informed.

During preliminary inquiry, police found that the girl was studying in Class X at a renowned English medium school in New Town. Her mother informed that she had been suffering from depression and was under the treatment of a doctor of a renowned private hospital located near Kadapara on Eastern Metropolitan (EM) Bypass.

Sources informed that the 16-year-old girl was staying with her mother at a flat in the said apartment, from where she committed suicide. Her mother and father had separated several years ago and since then she had been living with her mother.

Separation of her parents and family disputes has come up as the reason for her prolonged depression. However, no complaint has been lodged in connection with the suicide of the girl till Sunday night. An unnatural death case has been initiated in this regard.
