Kolkata: Coochbehar Police has arrested one Munna Khan on late Thursday night in connection with the death of a college student.
The victim, Majid Ansari (21), was a second year student of Coochbehar College and also the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) convenor.
He was shot at nearly a fortnight ago during a brawl with some former students of the college over admission issues. He succumbed in a private hospital in Siliguri on Wednesday night., It may be mentioned that state minister for North Bengal Development, Rabindranath Ghosh assured that those involved in the crime will be arrested and no one will be spared.
He also termed the incident as 'most unfortunate'.
The district police administration also took prompt action and arrested the accused Khan, who is also believed to be a Trinamool Congress activist in the area. A team of police officers raided his house at around 11.30 pm on Thursday and arrested him. Following the incident, many of his classmates and batch mates continued staging demonstrations on several occasions with blades, threatening to slash their hands if police failed to arrest the killers.
It was learnt that on July 13, Ansari and his friends had stopped some of the former students, who are also TMCP supporters, from entering the college premises as admissions in undergraduate courses were going on.
The victim and his associates had alleged that the rival group wanted to disrupt the admission process. The victim was later shot at by miscreants while returning home.
There had been continued protests and a complete shutdown of Cooch Behar. Even private buses were not operating on Thursday and shops remained closed from the morning. Police are interrogating the accused in this connection.
