Police found a body of a newborn at the entrance of Malda Medical College and Hospital on Friday night. An investigation was initiated by the Malda District Police to find out exact sequence of events. The hospital authority also started a similar investigation.
"A policeman was first to see the body lying in front of the hospital gate. He was on his duty then. He informed the matter to the senior officers as well as the hospital authority," said a local shopkeeper.
"It was a newborn's body. I was set to shut the shutter of my shop when the news reached me. I rushed there to see the lifeless body of the baby. Some police
officers and doctors from the hospitals reached there by that time. The body was taken inside the hospital," the shopkeeper added.
The policemen from English Bazar police station later started an investigation. The investigators discussed the matter with the hospital authority as well.
"We have to investigate who brought the body here also ascertain how the person could keep the body in front of the hospital despite tight security," said a police source.
The investigators are also trying to find out any possible link of child traffickers in this incident. "We do not know that if it is a case of medical negligence or not.
The hospital is also probing the incident. But we have to find out that whether there is any child trafficking racket involved here or not," said the source.
