Kolkata: Calcutta University (CU) will shift its Rajabazar and Ballygunge campuses to its integrated science and technology campus in New Town. The university is now preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the integrated campus coming up on a land of more than 5.50-acre, granted by the state government.

"Both the campuses are very old and are in need of urgent repair. However, it is difficult to take up proper repair work until the campuses are vacated. Hence, we are taking all steps to fast track the setting up of our New Town campus," Vice-Chancellor of CU, Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, said.

The university has plans to shift its Nano-Science campus in Salt Lake to the New Town campus.

"We have plans to set up an international standard guest house on the Salt Lake campus for lodging international guests.

"Currently, we have to make arrangements for guests in hotels resulting in a lot of expense," a senior official of the varsity said.

According to the official, the New Town campus will be a green one and there will be separate floors for each department with all modern facilities of laboratories, library, etc.

The integrated campus will involve a cost of Rs 100 crore and the state government has already allocated the amount to the university.

It may be mentioned that University College of Science and Technology was founded on March 27, 1914, by the great visionary, Asutosh Mukherjee, the then Vice-Chancellor of CU, using the generous donation from Taraknath Palit and Rashbehari Ghosh, who had donated nearly Rs 37.5 lakh together.

The first batch of teachers included Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, Sisir Kumar Mitra and the legendary 1915 MSc batch comprising Satyendranath Bose, Meghnad Saha, Jnan Chandra Ghosh and Jnanendra Nath Mukherjee among eminent personalities.
