Kolkata Police summoned an egg trader on Saturday in connection with the fake egg case. The trader, Sumit Deb, is CPI(M) leader Rabin Deb's nephew.
The cops received an information about the egg trader after interrogating a shopkeeper, Selim Ansari, who was arrested on charges of selling plastic eggs to Anita Kumar, a resident of Tiljala on Friday.
Ansari informed the police that one Sumit Deb, a city-based egg trader had supplied him several crates of the alleged fake plastic-made eggs.
The Enforcement Branch of the Kolkata Police would check the business-related documents of Deb. Sources also said, Ansari and Deb would be interrogated face-to-face.
"Yes, Sumit Deb is my nephew. I know that the Enforcement Branch had summoned him over the fake egg case. He submitted all his business-related documents to the investigators," said Rabin Deb while talking to Millennium Post on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) separately started raiding market places, in search of fake plastic eggs.
A KMC team led by Atin Ghosh, member, Mayor in Council (Health) raided shops at New Market on Saturday morning. Ghosh was accompanied by senior KMC officers.
Ghosh discussed the issue to the shopkeepers. "We have started an inquiry. The offenders will surely be punished," Ghosh said.
It may be mentioned, the Health department of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation bought three crates of eggs from a shop in Sealdah. Thecrates were later sent to the directorate of Animal Resource and Animal Health for necessary tests.
Mayor Sovan Chatterjee had ordered an inquiry after the incident. Tiljala resident, Anita Kumar allegedly purchased fake egg a few days ago. and her daughter fell ill after consuming the eggs.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation found that Ansari, the retail shopkeeper had bought eggs worth Rs 95,000 from wholesaler Deb. The KMC team also inspected several egg samples from different markets.
On Saturday, a team from the Howrah Municipal Corporation raided several markets. Bhaskar Bhattacharya, member, Mayor in Council
(Health) visited the markets along with his team. No fake egg was, however, found in the markets of Howrah.
On Saturday, a family at Garia's Panchasayar alleged that they bought eggs from a popular retail outlet but they were fake. "I found that the yolk of the eggs spread after breaking it in a bowl, which is a way to identify fake eggs," the customer alleged.
